-- Darrell Arthur, a starting forward on Kansas' national championship winning team, should not have eligible for college, Dallas TV station WFAA reported. Arthur, who scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Jayhawks' overtime win over Memphis in the NCAA title game last month, had grade changes made to maintain his eligibility while at nearby South Oak Cliff High. WFAA documented three instances of where Arthur had grades altered, including when he was a freshman in 2002-03. Former math teacher Winford Ashmore told the station that he was approached by former principal Donald Moten and current basketball coach James Mays about raising Arthur's grade.

Men's Basketball: Mayo Denies Allegations Of Cash And Gifts

-Former USC basketball star O.J. Mayo has denied allegations that he received cash and gifts from events promoter Rodney Guillory and said he was confident an investigation will determine he did not violate NCAA rules. "I know for a fact that I haven't accepted anything," Mayo told the Los Angeles Times for Thursday's editions. "My family hasn't accepted anything, so I'm just waiting for the NCAA to do what they have to do to prove that I haven't done anything wrong." Louis Johnson, a former associate of Mayo's, claimed in a segment of ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that Guillory received money from Bill Duffy Associates and funneled cash and gifts to Mayo.

-The long shadow of the Atlantic Coast Conference seemingly stretches all the way to the coastal North Carolina city where for years UNC Wilmington's proud baseball program lurked under the radar. Maybe all the Seahawks needed to begin emerging from that darkness was a season-long power surge. "We really didn't feel like this club would have this much power," coach Mark Scalf said Thursday. Surprise, coach. The nation's leading run-producer anchors a lineup that ranks as one of the most prolific in Division I, and previously helped lead the mid-major school with the modest tradition to 21 straight wins.

-Rick Duckett, an assistant coach at South Carolina for the last six seasons, was hired Thursday as the men's head coach at Grambling State University. Duckett had been as assistant to Dave Odom at South Carolina since 2002. Odom retired following the 2007-08 season. Duckett compiled a 150-75 record in eight seasons as head coach at Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State. He got his start in coaching as an undergraduate at North Carolina, leading the junior varsity program for Dean Smith.

Penn State coach Joe Paterno is in a hospital undergoing tests and is being treated for apparent dehydration. A team spokesman says the 81-year-old football coach was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center by ambulance Thursday morning after feeling nauseated. Guido D'Elia says Paterno has not been admitted to the hospital, but is currently undergoing tests. D'Elia says Paterno still plans to make a trip Friday to Texas for a dinner with University of Texas football coach Mack Brown.

-Former Drake basketball coach Tom Davis is retiring from his job as an assistant to the athletic director. Drake spokesman Mike Mahon said Thursday that Davis would leave his position. The move comes one month after his son, Keno Davis, left the Bulldogs to become the coach at Providence. The 69-year-old Davis was Drake's coach for four seasons. He left the bench before the 2007-08 season but stayed on as a special assistant to athletic director Sandy Hatfield-Clubb. Davis spent 32 years as a Division I head coach. He racked up 598 wins and led Drake to its first winning season in two decades in 2006-07.

-Southern California has signed a new 25-year lease that will keep the Trojans' football team in the Los Angeles Coliseum and include improvements in the stadium. USC has played in the 85-year-old facility since it was built in 1923. Among other details, the agreement calls for the Coliseum Commission to replace all of the seats, upgrade the video and scoreboard on the peristyle end and add a video-scoreboard on the other end of the stadium. The commission and the university also will try to get a naming rights sponsor for the facility.

Football: Perrilloux Signs With Jacksonville State

-Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, kicked off LSU's national championship team after repeated off-the-field problems, signed Wednesday with Jacksonville State. Perrilloux will be able to transfer and start immediately for the Gamecocks. The MVP of last season's Southeastern Conference title game won't have to sit out a year because Jacksonville State plays in the lower Football Championship Subdivision. Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe said he needed an experienced quarterback after dismissing last year's starter for disciplinary reasons. The 21-year-old Perrilloux was a sophomore last season.

But more than anything, I'll say this: Schedule manipulation has as much to do with national championship contenders as anything else.

With teams right on the brink of the final four, and a chance to play in front of over 50,00 fans, the stakes are ever so high. Here are my predictions and players who will be X-Factors (outside of goalies and face-off players, which is the case every week).

I think it would be disingenuous to say that having his kind of talent removed from the team would have no impact. When Ryan Perrilloux is right he would make any team better, I don't care if it's USC, because he is a phenomenally gifted player.
