During his five seasons at the helm of the Bobcat program, Carlston reached unparalleled levels of success, leading the squad to a ranking in the AVCA's Top 25 for 42 consecutive weeks. This season,
Carlston took over a program that had never won a Mid-American Conference Championship, and in his five seasons he led the team to five consecutive Mid-American Conference Championships and four MAC Tournament titles.

Under Carlston, the Bobcats made five-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history in 2005. This past season, the Bobcats received their first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and were selected as a host institution for the First and Second Rounds of the tournament for the first time in school history.

Individually, Carlston earned national and regional recognition as one of the top coaches in the country. In 2005, he was named Mideast Region Coach of the Year, Collegiate Volleyball Update Coach of the Year Honorable Mention and Tachikara/AVCA National Coach of the Year Honorable Mention. He was also named MAC Coach of the Year for four straight seasons (2003-06).
