SOUTH BEND, Ind. - For the second time this season and the fourth time in its last five matches, the No. 3 Indiana men's soccer team played into double overtime, recording a 0-0 tie against No.5 South Florida in the opening match of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament on the campus of Notre Dame.

Indiana is now 1-0-2 on the season, while South Florida is 1-0-1.

Indiana finished with 15 shots to the Bulls' eight, but just three of those attempts were on frame. The Hoosiers also had a commanding 12-1 advantage on corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.

"A scoreless tie is never fun," said head coach Mike Freitag. "We need to continue to figure out ways to create goals. I am pleased with a majority of our play in the game but there are obviously still things we need to work on.

"We played another great team and are disappointed with the tie. I felt we did enough to win, but it just wasn't there."

Andy Adlard got the starting nod for the first time this season, while Daniel Kelly was moved up top and Rich Balchan slid into the right back role.

Adlard earned the first corner kick for IU at five minutes in, but Daniel Kelly sent his header high after out-jumping the USF defense. Balchan also sent a header high off an Adlard corner kick at 13:25.

Indiana came out attacking in the first half, with Kevin Alston getting forward from his left back spot and Balchan getting up and involving himself in the offense. Both Yohance Marshall and Andre Mittoo had Will Bruin well marked up top, but the freshman managed to break free early on, including a header that was just off the mark.

The Hoosiers put together a dangerous sequence in front of the USF net at 18:45 that ended in a shot from Kelly which was saved by goalkeeper Diego Restrepo.

At 22:10 it was another dangerous run from Bruin, who took the ball around a pack of defenders before getting off a shot that Restrepo just managed to get a foot on, setting up the third corner kick of the afternoon for IU.

Senior Billy Weaver made his first appearance of the season as a late first-half sub for Bruin, joining Neil Wilmarth in the attack. Indiana held a slim 6-5 advantage in shots at the half, led by two each from Bruin and Kelly. Chay Cain had one save with another credited to the team.

"It is always frustrating not to score goals," Cain said. " We just need to get back on track. We have the guys to do it."

Indiana earned four corner kicks within the first five minutes of the second half but came up short on each attempt. On the fourth attempt the ball was cleared out to Ofori Sarkodie who sent in a good hard shot that curled just wide.

At 52:25 Brad Ring was left open to unleash his patented powerful shot and he had Restrepo beat but the attempt nicked just wide. Just over a minute later it was Bruin who lost his marker, spun around and sent a shot high.

Brian Ackley had an open-net look at 66:50 but the shot taken across his body went wide. With 2:30 left in regulation, South Florida's Jordan Seabrook had a clear shot that Cain was able to save, but the ball went back into play giving the Bulls a second chance. Seabrook got to the ball and sent it across an open net but his teammates were unable to get there in time.

John Mellencamp had the initial shot for IU in the first overtime, a weak roller that Restrepo picked up. That was it for the Hoosiers as neither team posed a threat over the 10-minute span.

Darren Yeagle came in with a pair of fresh legs up top to open the second overtime but the Hoosiers still struggled to put the ball on frame.

Indiana wraps up tournament play on Sunday as they face Dartmouth at 11:30 a.m. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Hoosiers and Big Green.
