Neil Schenk and Trey Wiedman Named to C-USA All-Academic Baseball Team

Tigers top pitcher and hitter excel in the classroom as well as on the field


Neil Schenk was one of two Tigers honored on the 2008 C-USA All-Academic baseball team.

IRVING, Texas - Senior Neil Scenk and sophomore Trey Wiedman were named to the 2008 Conference USA All-Academic Baseball Team, as selected by the league's sports information directors.

Schenk was one of five seniors to earn the scholastice honor, while Wiedman was one of four sophomores make up the team.

Schenk was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team and will be eligible for All-America honors. With a 3.88 GPA as a Spanish major, Schenk was selected the 2008 Memphis Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He made a team-high 19 appearances on the mound and led Memphis with a 3.40 ERA.

Wiedman is a two-time selection to the Commissioner's Honor Roll and Dean's List as an exercise sport and science major maintaining a 3.32 GPA. He started every game for the Tigers this season and led the team with a .302 batting average.

The duo are the third and fourth Tigers to be placed on the C-USA Academic squad. Ben Grisham and Michael Murray were named to the team in 2007.

Rice and Southern Miss, who will respectively be the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the 2008 C-USA Championship, placed three student-athletes apiece on the all-academic squad. Houston, UCF all had two selections to the baseball all-academic team, which consists of student-athletes with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve for their team.
